History

Kozhikode, the most important region of Malabar, which is well known for its friendly ambience with its greenary, rivers, hills, wild life sanctuaries, world famous beaches, historic sites etc is came in to existence as an administrative unit on 1st January 1957. When the states of the Indian Union were reorganized on linguistic basis the state of Kerala formed on 1st November 1956 with undivided Malabar as it s one of the province. Later as per Government order Malabar province was divided into three districts with some changes in the boundaries of some of the taluks. Kozhikode district found a place in the world history long before its formation on 1st January 1957 with five talukas viz Vadakara, Koyilandy, Kozhikode, Eranad and Tirur when Vasco Da Gama, the famous Portuguese Navigator landed at Kappad sea shore with three vesels in the year 1498.

The tradition regarding the founding of the Zamorins dynasty tells of the last of the Perumals gifting to the Eranad Utayavar his sword and the patch of marshy land on the coast of what is today Calicut. Malabar as a maritime point is well known for its spice trade with its chief ports as Chaliyam, Panthalayani kollam and Ezhimala.

Kozhikode is well known for its cultural entity having renowned literary legends like S.K.Pottekkad, M.T.Vasudevan Nair, Vaikom Muhammed Basheer, U.A.Khader, P.Valsala, M.G.S.Narayanan and the list continues. Moreover many eminent musicians like M.S.Baburaj, Singers, Poets, Cine Actors, Actresses, Screen Play Writers, Cine Directors have added glory to the district of Calicut. Many famous monuments like Pottekkad Smarakam, Vasco Da Gama monument, Kunjali Marakkar Monument etc add wings to the cultural boon of Calicut.

The Political history of Kozhikode begins when Western powers started establishing trade points at Calicut Ports. Many travelers are attracted to Calicut for its charming physical features, unique culture, warm and friendly atmosphere and its prosperity. Kozhikode is situated on the South Westrn coast of India, some 500 Kms North of the Southern tip of Indian peninsula at approximately 11.25° N 75.77° E. The moderate climate ranging between 37° C and 19° C makes the living much comfort. The coastal line of Kozhikode is stretching to 71 Kms from Chaliyar to Azhiyoor.

The revenue district covers on area of 2206 Sq.Kms. It is bounded on the North by Kannur district, Malappuram district on the South, Wayanad district on the East and the Arabian Sea on the west. The most beautiful feature of Kozhikode as seen from the sea is the famous hills of the Western Ghat rising some 60 Kms to the East of the coast. Several rivers originating from Western Ghats are flowing through the district. Main rivers are Kuttiady river, Agalappuzha, Kallai River, Chaliyar river and Kadalundi river.
